Management researchers collect data at USMC Camp Lejeune

A Michigan State University research team visited Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, May 18–22 to collect data for a research project for the U.S. Marine Corps under a grant from the Department of Defense.

The USMC study reviews team decision making under different problem solving and physical conditions. MSU researchers designed four tasks that required different combinations of problem solving and physical requirements. Participants were randomly assigned to teams and worked together to complete each task within 18 minutes. The discussion that took place among the participants as they worked towards completing each task was coded by researchers to examine the decision-making process they used.

Crystal Farh, assistant professor of management, and John Hollenbeck, University Distinguished Professor and Eli Broad Professor of Management, were awarded a $276,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Defense through the Office of Naval Research to study gender integration in traditionally male-dominated teams. The research will be conducted in Quantico, Virginia, and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and the results from that research will be used for future decisions by the U.S. Marine Corps as it considers alternative methods for gender integration in infantry units.
